Embracing productivity is the key to booking gigs in the middle of a pandemic. Think short-term. Consider project-based online gigs. Plan your work for the next 30 days, two months, and three months. When looking for an online job, think about now, and not about retirement. Take tasks outside of your career path. Find gigs that can awaken creativity, says staffing expert Steve Sorensen. No one gets reprimanded for taking jobs outside of their career.
Review your current skill set and look for opportunities to use these. Regardless of one’s background, if they have the skills, they may fit the role. Stay in touch with current formal employers and colleagues. When circumstances become favorable, one may still be able to keep their position. There is no reason for burning bridges.
Steve Sorensen echoes that during an economic slowdown, it’s best to improve one’s skills and build their network. Look into MOOCs or massive open online courses to build a stronger foundation now, which can give you more career opportunities when the crisis ends. Rediscovered passions can create a new career path for one, and strengthened work relationships can be a good testament to one’s interpersonal skills.
