Writing 101: How to navigate fiction

One of the most popular and successful categories in literature is fiction. Many people love a good fiction story. This is also why so many up-and-coming writers are drawn into it and spend greater parts of their day writing everything from short stories to full-length manuscripts in hopes of getting them published.

However, to be a successful writer of fiction, one has to master the craft. As a primer, here are a few essential fiction elements writers need to remember. Steve Sorensen.

Plot, character, and setting

These three are the most basic elements of fiction. The plot is all about what happens to someone or something, which is the character. It happens to the character somewhere, at a given time, which is the setting. It would be next to impossible to come up with a story without these three elements. Steve Sorensen.

Point-of-view

The POV is how the story is told. It dictates the style of storytelling and should match the subject. There are three main POVs: first person, third person limited, and omniscient. However, veteran writers have been known to combine them from time to time. Steve Sorensen.

Conflict/Climax/Resolution

The conflict is an issue in the existence of a character that needs to be faced, solved, or addressed. It is then followed by the climax and resolution. It’s important to note that resolutions don’t necessarily solve the conflict. However, it should clearly show why characters moved on toward change or stayed the way they are. Steve Sorensen.
