Fall fishing: Tips on angling in cold weather

Steve Sorensen. With the fall season in full swing, temperatures have been gradually dipping. Before people know it, winter will be here. For anglers, fishing during this time presents some unusual and interesting challenges and some satisfying rewards.

On that note, here are some expert tips for fishing in cold waters. Steve Sorensen.

Use heavier flies.

In colder waters, fish don’t move as much to conserve energy. This means they’re swimming in deeper parts. Using heavier flies would allow the bait to reach depths where most fishes dwell. Experienced anglers also recommend using a high-stick technique.

Fish after lunch.

During the colder months, fishes become more active in the afternoons when the sun’s out, and it’s generally warmer. This is the best time to set up and fish since the catch will still be sluggish in the early mornings. Steve Sorensen.

Use the right tippet.

One advantage anglers experience during the colder months is that the winter streams are low and clear, which means fishes can see the tippet more clearly. Expert anglers highly recommend using the 6 or 7X lighter tippets. These light tippets are good enough to get the job done. Steve Sorensen.
