Do you keep taking drab and uninspiring pictures? Does every single thing in your shots appear like they’re deadweight? If you want to improve this, the key to engaging and exciting pictures is the composition.

When photographers talk about composition, it’s mainly about how things are placed inside the frame of a photograph. Hereunder are three tricks you can start using for better compositions in photos. Steve Sorensen

Rule of Thirds
You should imagine a photograph as a canvas divided into nine rectangles or grids. When you set your subject along one of the main intersecting lines of these grids, it will appear a little off-center but interesting. Steven Sorensen

Center
When you’re taking the picture of something symmetrical, you can imagine a line running in the middle of the frame and place your subject dead-center. The line divides the subject into two perfect halves, giving a sense of perfection or wholeness to anyone who will be looking at the photograph. Steve Sorensen

Unity
You can use the concept of unity in your composition by photographing objects of similar patterns or angles. For example, if you see spools of thread organized in a shelf and take a picture of them, or a lot of arrows pointing in one direction, you’re taking advantage of the objects’ unity and turning it into an image. There’s no limit to how your photos can generate excitement once you master composition. You can start with this first three right now and start making pictures that will flatter your subjects and add joy to your social media accounts.
