Everyone wants to step up their photography game. Whether you’re an enthusiast or someone with the goal to make it a business in the future, developing key skills in photography should be your priority.

Learn to study your surroundings. Being observant pays in this industry. Know how to position your subject according to the objects that surround it. Take a few minutes before you take the shot in order to see how you can frame your subject. Wait for the light. Beginner photographers may not have all the equipment yet, but natural light should do. Learn how to make good use of natural light and practice techniques using such before transitioning to strobes and other kinds of lighting.

If you’re taking photos of wildlife, be sure to be one with nature. Try to blend in and avoid disturbing wildlife in their natural habitat. Shoot from the vantage point of your subject. Allow kids to be kids and let them be natural in the photos you take. If possible, be their photographer and hype man. Know everything about your camera by learning one new thing about it every time you bring it to a shoot.

Don’t depend on your built-in flash. Lighting a subject from the same angle as the lens is unflattering and leaves you without any natural shadows of your scene. Each time you go out to shoot, find a fresh perspective. Zoom in with your feet especially when you’re using a prime lens. This will help you get closer with your subject while learning how to find the sweet spot of your lens.
